Apart from the suggestions given above, you can extend the material type from lower level to higher level but not vice versa.

For example, you can extend HALB to FERT but <b>NOT</b> FERT to HALB.

Use the T.Code [MMAM] for changing the material type and [CATT] for multiple materials.
