Payroll period signifies the frequency of payment and the start & end date for the frequency. For example Monthly , weekly, fornightly are the frequency of payment and 1st - 30th/31st , 1 - 7, 8- 14, 15 - 21, are the dates for each frequency.
Also you can have two weekly payroll periods, with each having different dates.
one with 1- 7, 8 - 14, 15 -21 so on and the other like 4 - 10, 11- 17, 18 - 24 so on.
Reward if this was helpful.

Exactly as it sounds, a period of time that a payroll run is processed for, a payroll period is assigned a number which corresponds to a date range. For example a monthly payroll would have payroll periods 1 - 12 one for each month, A weekly payroll would have 52 periods and so on.
Hope this helps,
Alec
