Can somebody give details the steps involved in an upgrade project say from ver 4.6c to ECC 6. What exactly is done & how it is done.
DM,
Refer below
Upgrade Projects can follow one of the 2 possibility.
1. Technical Upgrade: in which the basis consultant will handle the same & transport the configurations & developments from 5.0 to 6.0. Subsequent to which functional consultant & ABAP er will do the necessary change in configuration or further configuration & ABAP ers will do necessary developments required.
2. Traditional ASAP mythology: which would refer as new implementation as a whole.
STEPS IN TECHNICAL UPGRADE
Basis Team will do the prepare activities. (UNIX, BASIS, DBA).
The client has modified Developer need to run the Transaction SPDD, which provides the details of SAP Standard Dictionary, objects that. Users need to take a decision to keep the changes or revert back to the SAP Standard Structure. More often decision is to keep the change. This is mandatory activity in upgrade and avoids data loses in new system.
After completing SPDD transaction, we need to run SPAU Transaction to get the list of Standard SAP programs that have been modified. This activity can be done in phases even after the upgrade. Generally this will be done in same go so that your testing results are consistent and have more confident in upgrade.
Run SPUMG Transaction for Unicode Conversion in non-Unicode system. SPUM4 in 4.6c.
Then we need to move Z/Y Objects. Need to do Extended programming check, SQL trace, Unit testing, Integration testing, Final testing, Regression Testing, Acceptance Testing etc.,
The main Category of Objects that needs to be Upgraded is
Includes
Function Groups / Function Modules
Programs / Reports
OSS Notes
SAP Repository Objects
SAP Data Dictionary Objects
Domains, Data Elements
Tables, Structures and Views
Module Pools, Sub Routine pools
BDC Programs
Print Programs
SAP Scripts, Screens
User Exits
the simple difference between the upgrade and implementation project is that one is done for upgrading the old system to the new ones and the other is a completely different study and in implementation project it is very necessary to undersatand the business process from the scratch and provide with the necessary analysis..
whenever u r working on a upgrade project it is very important to understand the New Technology well at the same time the need of upgradation from old system to the new ones..
there are time when people really ignore the facts of understanding the business practices in the old system and what new technology is really intended to do for them..
the most important things which are to be kept in mind whn working on upgrade project is that underestanding the importance of data.. it is very eary to upgrade the error free data into the new system but here people ignore the fact that error free data is very much different from the Business Ready Data.. which ufcourse is same as the process involved in data migration.. the point here is it is very important to analyze the business data as this is the most important part of any support implementation..
in upgrade project it is very important for the fucntional consultant to prepare the business specifications very approriately as these are the docs which are basis for further process of project..
while studying business requirements in a upgrade project it is important to study the existing system, the positive and the negatve things of the existing system..say in other words a small gap analysis like stuff..
a small study of technical requirements is also necessary which ofcorce is a part of technical people but still it is always good to have a review on the technical stuff
and also for an fucntional consultant it is very important to have a check on the different erp products avaialble in the market as it is always gud to have an eye on the competitors in order to give the client the best the system has to offer for..
a through testing of data both in functional and technical flow should also be done in an upgarde project..
lastly speaking in short the role of functional consultant in an upgrade project.. his role is more or like the same as in the implementation with small changes in the responsibilities...

Hi DM
There are two types of Upgradation:
1) Technical
2) Functional.
Technical: It is puerly relevant for ABAP development.
First they will prepare Business Process Master List.(BPML).
It contains what are the business process, transaction codes, programs etc.
They will cross check whether the business process, transaction codes, programs etc are functioning properly in the existing system. If not, they will go for
ABAP development in that System.
Then they will go for user document preparation and user training documentation & Scripts.(Nothing but templates).
Reward if useful to u
