At company, the business analyst is the person who knows the business process outside the system as well as the business process as it relates the the transactoins in SAP. They work with the user in developing new business procesess and sometimes creating new applications in SAP(with a developers help of course). A lot of time is spent helping resolve issues that the users come across.

A business analyst is a bridge between Client and the Developer. Business Analyst is the one who knows or understands the clients business and proposes the model for implementing the project in SAP considering the gaps, time required and the man power required.

Just check the BPX Community section, that should help you a lot I believe

-> do I have to know anything specifically to handle a business analyst (like abap for programming ....)

I presume the above question is same as "what I have to know/learn inorder to become a business analyst in sap"

People cannot become a Business Analyst just like that. It requires a lot of industry experience / domain knowledge of business. With such good knowledge in the domain and one can specialize in appropiate modules in SAP as per his/her likes. Thus the person will be in a very good position to study/understand clients business requirements and simultaneously map the same or provide better solution which are available in SAP.

Some information about SAP functional areas are here

All technical and functional help pdf documents are available in this link

Hope this would guide you to plan further. Best wishes for the same.
