Dear Satya,

1. The SAP Application Server is the server that implements the Business Logic for an Enterprise.

It consists of many processes which cater to requests coming from the Presentation Layer and implement them. An application server requires a Database to function.

2. Disaster server, is a remote Database server which has the complete up to date data files and offline redolog files backup at a remote location which is used to recover your existing database in case of a database crash/ system crash in case of a natural/human disaster causing you to loose all your data as well as backup tapes.
