Hi Debasish,

In Real practice, most of the companies, has storage locations seperately for the purpose of Recieving, Shipping, Scrapping, for inspecting etc. So u recieve the material in one storage location, do processing in another, ship to customer from another. So this helps us to know the type/Status of stock just by knowing the storage location. Thus we do internal transfer from storage loc to storage loc.

A stock transfer from storage location to storage location takes place within a plant. It is usually posted without value, since the transferred material is managed in the same plant and therefore has the same valuation data as before. If the material is subject to split valuation, and the valuation type of the material changes due to the stock transfer, the system also creates an accounting document during the stock transfer.

Hi All,

In a cut short, while receiving the materials based on the stock type and the inspection we do, we transfer the material to the concerned storage location.

Ex: (In case of warehouse)

1. Counting

2. Quality Inspection

3. Blocked Stock

4. Returns

In the above cases, if you want to do the counting, before you do the final putaway, you transfer the materials first to counting storage location.

If the Quality Management is active, you transfer the materials to Quality S.Loc, create the inspection lot, submit the results and then you do the final put away into the storage bins, till then then stock will be restrictive mode.

Regarding returns, when u get the returns straight away you won't transfer the materials to the concerned storage location, first you check for the quality and condition of the material and then you do the putaway, till then the material is restrictive in nature.

Reward if it is helpful.

Hi,

It is purely based on the business requirement. For example two different departments are under same plant but they are having separate storage locations.

If one department wants material from other department the materials are transferred from one department to other department using "storage location to storage location transfer" so that the inventory will reduce from the issuing department and the inventory will increase in the receiving department.

Once the receiving department consumes the materisl the costing will be accounted on the receiving department.

Thanks and regards

Hi Debasis

It is required as per the business process. Imagine there are several locations inside a plant. lets say one is the central stores & another is the machine work shop location. Now 1 material is issued from central stores to the machine shop. So there is a movement of the material means qty issued from central stores will get reduced & qty at machine shop will increase. If you do not do the storage location transfer in Sap it will mislead to the users & exact qty calculation at the respective location will wrong. Its a process of inventory management.

Hope it is clear. Pls reward if u find ur answer.
