It provides a central, role-specific point of entry to unstructured information from various data sources in the portal.
You can read lots on KM and the most basic point to remember is that it is not part of SAP NetWeaver Portal but a part of the SAP NetWeaver stack itself.If you look closely at the SAP NetWeaver refridgerator diagram, Knowledge Management (KM) is part of the Information Integration component and Collaboration, a part of People Integration component. Portal is a medium by which we can make use of both these components.
