I have been given the assignment of "managing" the brconnect for our systems.
I have only been on the SAP administration team for two years. My background is networking and desktop. I am comfortable with UNIX scripting, perl, and have even contributed to larger Java development efforts.
The one thing I am not familar with is Oracle. We have a "dedicated" DBA, but they are part of the DBA team and aren't well versed in SAP. So far we have made this arrangement work - but I feel like I need to "read up" on Oracle if only to be more fluent when I work with the DBA; I wpu;d also like to be able to interpret some of the logs I get in brconnect, and as I said, at least to be able to speak intelligibly when I work with the DBA.
Our group isn't in a position to send me to any Oracle training, though I will likely be able to attend the SAP Oracle Administration class (ADM 505 - I think) in the next few months.
Aside from this, I was wondering if there are any books that I might find useful in bringing up my Oracle IQ. This would also be useful prior to my attending ADM 505.
There are SO MANY books, and some of them seem to target specific topics in Oracle. Are there any that provide a decent comprehensive overview?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff,
Books from Oracle press are quite useful, I would recommand books from author Kevin Loney to clear basic concepts of Oracle. He also gets into more details.
The book is:
Oracle9i
The Complete Reference
By: Kevin Loney, George Koch
SAP service marketplace and SDN are also very useful resources for Oracle.

beside the SAP oracle guides the Oracle database documents are also helpful.

It is not bad to start with the SAP Oracle FAQs.
e.g.
SAP Notes
592393 - FAQ: Oracle
651812 - FAQ: BR*TOOLS and SAPDBA
etc....
