ITS and WAS

Dear Guru,

Is ICM (Internet Communication Manager) that exist in WAS a replacement for ITS (wGate & AGate)? Is the Web Browser talk directly to ICM or there is ITS in between where Web Browser talk directly to ITS first (wGate) ? The architectures in some powerpoint slides didn't clearly state where to put ITS in WAS Architecture. I understand ITS is just an middleware to translate ABAP <-> HTML. Can ICM do that ?

I understand that WebAS 6.4 has ITS integrated inside.

So before WebAS 6.4, is ITS part of WAS or there are two separate entities that has different functions ?

Regarding Integrated ITS (ICF), I have the understanding. My question is just focus on standalone ITS.

When Raja said

then when deploy Standalone ITS (No ICM in WebAS), SAP System also web accessible. Does it mean ITS makes the SAP system http enabled as well ?

you are right , but this is restricted. you server side scripting using abap are very limited in this case.

Yes Raja is right.ICM is used for enabling the HTTP protocol so that browsers like IE can contact easily.It built of ICF framework

Hi,

The SAP Internet Transaction Server (SAP ITS) is integrated into the kernel of the SAP Web Application Server 6.40 as an Structure linkInternet Communication Framework (ICF) service called the integrated ITS. Like other ICF services, the integrated ITS is accessed through the Structure linkInternet Communication Manager (ICM).

ICM is not a replacement for ITS.

ICM makes the SAP system http enabled.

Webbrowsers can now talk direly to SAP (ICM).

the integrated ITS (from WAS6.4) can only work for tranforming SAP GUI to a HTML format (WEBGUI). but for IACs based on WebRFC and Flow logic model still needs a standalone ITS.

ITS has three programming models.

WEBGUI -> standard SAP GUI is translated for web and the look and feel is similar to SAP GUI and you wont have much control over (on the client side) the look and feel and navigation.

WEBRFC & Flow logic model -> using this method you can write applications which will look like any normal web page. this approach is used when the navigation is complex. And this is not supported in Integrated ITS.

Hi,

Before release of SAP Web AS 6.10 user access was based upon a web browser and access to the system was via ITS. To provide this access ITS required a connection to the web server.Also it was not platform dependent. The only programming language available was ABAP. Connections to external sys were made thru RFC.

With release of SAP Web AS 6.10 ITS was replaced with ICM. It manages communication b/w browsers and SAP Web AS. It is integrated into SAP Web AS architecture.SAP Web AS 6.10 didnt have a Java engine.

First version of SAP J2EE engine was released with SAP Web AS 6.20 making it a J2EE-certified application server. This enables the development and deployment of ABAP-based or J2EE-based applications on the same instance.

With SAP Web AS 6.30 there were changes in architecture of J2EE engine. The main feature introduced with 6.30/6.40 is Web dynpro. Also included is SAP NDS.
