We usually have a ABAP UME for an ABAP+JAVA instance.
How to choose a non-ABAP UME for it?

goto..UME configuration option...
There you will have the option for the source system where you can mention the your source database ....

During the installation of Java-addin, it prompts you for UME location and its there that you define if it has to be from ABAP or external source.
