SAP patches are collection of corrections to the standard sap programs and/or it include new functions ( enhancements)

When you download from service market place the patch will be .car file ( like a zip file) , once extracted you will .pat and att file

<b>What are the steps in applying the patches?</b>
1) Make sure you have a valid backup
2) Update kernel or atleast update tp,R3trans
2) Update SPAM/SAINT
3)Apply patches using SPAM

No , It depends upon your requirement
<b>What are the possible errors/problems i will encounter in this patches?</b>
Known issues will be recorded in SAP note , check OSS for the specific release

It will correct the errors in your system , sometimes it will improve performance , enhanced functionality etc
