Hello All,

Thanks a lot for adding your thoughts.

So now R3 system is OLTP system .Correct?

Now R3 system is upgraded to ECC 6.0 ( it has sap_bw soft. component )

So now ECC 6.0 is OLTP or OLAP system? Thanks

If you have an R/3 system (OLTP) and you are upgrading it and you are using it as you used to, it is still an OLTP. As Marcus and Eric said, the other scenario (activate BW functionality) is technically possible, but it doesn't make sense as the settings for the database are very different between BW and R/3

In short, the answer is that the new system is OLTP

Hello Eric,

I think I should rephrase the query.

R3 ( 4.7 ) system is OLTP. Now this is upgraded to ECC6 which has sap_bw integrated. So ECC6 is OLTP or OLAP.?

ECC 6.0 or 5.0 do not have BW integrated. It has functionality so that a BW system can pull data from it (from the ECC system). Therefore, an ECC system is OLTP

I hope this helps

This is not true.

The component SAP_BW, which is integrated as of Netweaver 04, is in fact the OLAP processor, that IS the BW/BI. There's no content but with a system containing SAP_BW you can do what you would do with a normal BW. If you install BI_CONT ass AddOn with SAINT, you can run everything in one system.

One can run ECC and BW in the same instance, however, from a database parametrization view, this is not optimal - but technically possible.

Marcus, that's very interesting, I didn't know it. Would you have any link in SAP Help giving some more information on this?

Many thanks

It´s the standard Netweaver (2004 or 2004s/6.40 or 7.00) documentation.

Check with System - Status - Components in any 6.40 or 7.00 system, the component SAP_BW is integrated. You can even execute RSA1 on those systems.

Hello,

Thanks a lot.

Now does it mean that every system having soft. component SAP_BW is OLAP system?

R3 system which is upgraded to ECC6 ( has sap_BW) is OLAP or OLTP.

if you have a Netweaver system with both R/3 (ECC) and BW (BI), then you system is mixed.

I do not recommended mixing OLAP and OLTP systems on the same instance.

R/3 based systems are OLTP

BW based systems are OLAP

APO/SCM/SEM are also OLAP

transation systems = OLTP

warehouse/analytical systems are OLAP
