What is the advantage of XI compred to ALE/EDI?
why we have to create datatype and assing to msgtype? can we directly create message type and use it?

ALE Vs XI

Datatypes are abstract types. The <xsd:element name > tag defines the root of an xml message. This is not present in datatype. Xi always require a root element to send the data.

No we can't craete a message type directly u have to use a data type.
In case of IDOC, RFC u can use it directly.. there is no need to create a data type then.
