Where do we set the status of a material., like whether the material is active or inactive.

Hi Shankar,
You can use [MM06] and mark the item for deletion. This would ensure the material to be inactive and can be done at various level. If required using the same option you can make it active again.

in MM01 or MM02 basic data 1 there is a field "X-plant matl status" and also in MRP1 screen check the field "plant sp matl status"
