Hi Joseph,
As Craig said there are two directions you can take one is Administration and other is development. WAS consists of two stacks an ABAP stack and Java stack. I will try to give my thoughts about the prerequisites -
1. Administration - Often called Basis, if you have previous experience or understanding of OS & DB level administration it will help. For ABAP stack everything will be new, for Java stack any experience in J2EE administration will be helpful.
2. Development - For ABAP stack any previous experience in other programming language is going to help. Invariably you will need knowledge of SQL. For Java stack any previous experience in Java programming or J2EE programming will help.
Cheers,
Sanjeev

WAS is "Web Application Server"
In terms of the SAP WebAS there is the BASIS side, the Development side as well as whatever other modules are loading on the system.
What exactly is it you want to learn more about?
