Can you pls little info on "wat is the main purpose of kernel", y do we upgrade it once in a while . Pls reply.

The kernel provides the runtime environment for the ABAP, without the kernel, the system doesn´t "understand" ABAP.

It dpends whether your installation was installed as Unicode or not.

Actual patches can be retrieved from

If you do that, you will need to do a Unicode migration later if you upgrade, subsequent releases are provided as Unicode only - just as info.
