i have created an assortment module with 2 materials and done the pricing procedure assignment-doc pri proc-Y
Now when i create a contract with Va41 it gives a mess tat no pricing procedure could be determined
what could be the problem

check whether value contract mat assigned to item cat
I think there is a value contract pricing procedure and the same need to be assigned in procedure determination.

pricing can be done in release order
the pricing assignments are correct hence i am surprised that I have got this error

Just check your doc type settings regarding Conracts in VOV8. Hope there may be some solution.
