Hi,
In a situation where in the sales doc. type (trx. VOV8) - both the <i>No. range int.assgt.</i> and <i>No.range ext. assg.</i> are filled in.
How will the number range be determined? Can this setting be maintained - e.g. can we maintain an <i>int. no. range</i> assignment for automatic flows <b>as well as</b> an <i>ext. no. range</i> for manual and external system flows?
If this is possible - what other settings need to be maintained ?
Thanks,
sapman.
External number assignment is used when the user manually enters the sales order number within the corresponding number range.
Internal number assignment is used system automatically proposes the sales order number within the corresponding number range.
Number Ranges are defined through transaction VN01 and then assigned to the respective order type in VOV8.
We can assign both the numbers to our document type. We can create document using both number ranges.
If the sales document is generated through IDOC then the system will pick only the internal number range not the external one. But if there is any requirement that we need to use the external number range then we ask our partner to send the sales order number with in that number range and then we will test that in the SAP IDOC testing tool transaction WE19.
Reward points if helpful.
Thanks in advance.

Hello Priyanka,
Thanks, that was helpful.
You seem to be familiar with IDOC interfaces and all.
Suppose My document type gets generated automatically with internal iDocs and uses the internal no. range. Now, if in an alternative scenario, sometimes the document type also gets generated through CRM Bdocs - (having its own no. range) how should we configure the Doc. Type?
Should we go ahead and configure the external no. range (of the CRM system) in the Doc. type or is there any other way. Idocs I am familiar with - but Bdocs are a different story!
Full Points for Answer!
Thanks, sapman.
Hi Sapman,
Check with Tcode called OVT0customer account group detals screen under general data tab there u can find that number ranges assigned to ur account group. this is the way system can pick number ranges. here u can assign internal or external number ranges.
Let me know if it is work fine

Hi,
It is possible for a Doc.Type to have both internal and external number assignment.
While using the document type, if you havent entered the document number then system would take the internal number assignment and the current number used based on which the next number would be generated.
If you have entered the document number manually then the system would take the external number assignment and check whether the number you have entered falls within the range specified.

Thanks Nadarajah,
Suppose I configure my Doc. Type to have both internal no.range and an external no. range.
If an inbound Idoc / Bdoc creates the Sales Document (of that Doc.type) and with the no.range matching that of the assignment - it should pick up the external no.?
Thanks. Bonus points for answer.

Hi,
At a time you can only assign any one number range. Either external or internal. You create number range in VN01. There you can mention whether a particular number range is external or internal.
In VOV8 when we configure the sales doc. type, there you have to specify whehter it should take external or internal number range.

external number assignment:
When creating a document with external number assignment, the user must enter a document number that lies within the corresponding number range.
internal number assignment:
When creating a document with internal number assignment, the system assigns a number that lies within the appropriate number range.
Define the number ranges in T.Code: VN01.
and assign them to the sales document type in T.code: VOV8.
