ECC6 running on VMware guest partition over Linux

Former Member

Hi - for a re-implementation, we want to be able to run ECC6 on MSSQL on Win2003, using VMWARE partitions hosted on a physical Linux server. We would like use the same platform for Production to keep consistency of platform, and because we only have about 10-15 concurrent users.

I wasn't sure about which OSS note is right for our scenario:

674851 'VMware for Windows' (does this mean VMware hosted on a physical Windows server, or any VMware partitions running Windows as a guest o/s?)

OR

895807 SAP support in virtualized Linux environments

Any help would be appreciated - thanks in advance.

What you can try also is using the "native" Linux virtualization (XEN), as of SP1 SLES 10 has support for Windows guests.

However, I´d not use that (as of now) for a production installation.

Dear Patrick,

running Windows2003 VMware partitions on a physical Linux Server is only possible when using VMware GSX Server. Please take into account, that SAP Note <a href="https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=674851">674851</a> explicitly states (at the bottom), that VMware GSX Server is not supported.

Only VMware ESX server, which does not need any host operating system, can be used with SAP in conjunction with all restrictions mentioned in SAP Notes <a href="https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=674851">674851</a> and <a href="https://websmp130.sap-ag.de/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/sapnotes/index2.htm?numm=895807">895807</a>.

Nevertheless, virtualization is still not approved by SAP for unrestricted productive use. To get a official statement or maybe an individual approval, please open Customer Message on the SAP Service Marketplace on component BC-OP-NT (for Windows guests) or BC-OP-LNX (for Linux guests).

Thanks,
