ASTM Table 53 / 54

Hi,

We are using Base Oil as our product. Can anyone suggest which table shall I use for conversion.

Or else can someone suggest what are the basic difference between ASTM Table 53 / 54 A,B,C,D apart from which type of product these are being used for. I mean more mathematically, what is that these tables do different from each other.

Also is there a download link to any ASTM 53 54 table available with you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Dear Mr Kaviraj,

This is to the question on base oil.

My company also handles the product and we use the table 54 D.

It stands for : 53&54D 15 °C LUBES IN DENSITY.

It is preferred because the material (base oil) is treated as a lubricant.

The description of the tables is as follows:-

534A- 53&54A 15 °C CRUDE OIL IN DENSITY

534B- 53&54B 15 °C (finished) PRODUCTS IN DENSITY

534C- 54C 15 °C CHEMICALS IN DENSITY

Regarding the difference between the tables 53 and 54, you may find the following information useful:-

TABLE 53B – Correction of observed Density to Density @ 15’C

TABLE 54B – Correction of Volume to 15’C Against Density at 15’C

K Gopidas

Hi Gopidas,

Good to know you deal with Base oil. But if you are using 534D then how do you deal with densities less than 800 Kgv? Because 534D does not allow below this range.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Dear Kaviraj,

Happy to know that my information could be of interest to you.

I am slightly lost on the part of densities below 800 Kgv.

The copy of ASTM-IP that I have with me offers me a reading in the table 54 (Volume reduction to 15 degrees C) beginning with a density of .500 and observed temperature of -50 degrees C.

This is on page number 300 in the 1953 edition and my copy is reprinted in 1965.

I unfortunately do not have the corresponding equivalents in the later (1982) edition.

You may find the information useful.

Regards,

K Gopidas.

Hi Gopidas,

By any chance do you have the soft copy of the ASTM table. If you have can you please forward that to me.

Thanx,

Anubhav

Dear Kaviraj,

Sorry to disappoint you.

I do not have an electronic version of the tables.

In case you so require, I could mention you the place (in India) from where the book(s) of standards may be purchased.

Hi anubhav,

YOu will get the hard copy of these ASTM tables at any Oil Industry bulk terminal across india. You can look for one such location in your town either in telephone directory or yellow pages. They would allow you take a photocopy of the same.
