Kernel Upgrade Release 640 Patch 175

Former Member

Dear Basis Gurus,

We are planning to upgrade SAP Kernel for Release 640 and Patch 109.

We have referred oss note Note 1027100 - CST Patch Collection 08 2007 and this note suggest to go for patch level :

4.6D: 2307

6.40: 171

7.00: 98

I have checked the service market place and I didn't find the Patch Level 171. Instead I foud Patch level 175.

1) Can you please let me know if since Patch Level 171 is not the latest, can I got for Patch level 175 ?

2) Can you also please let me know which files I need to download other than SAPEXE_175-10004469.SAR and SAPEXEDB_175-10004468.SAR ?

Should I need to download dw_193-10004469.sar and R3trans_192-10004469.SAR and tp_193-10004469.sar ? If you see this has the patch level 193 and for R3trans it is 192 ?

How to decide for Patch Level 175, which other files can go ?

Do we really need to replace other files like R3trans, tp ? or only those in SAPEX*.SAR ?

3) What would be the correct approach ? I am planning to replace kernel 1st in Development system, then Consoldiation system and then Test system and then finally Production system ? is this correct approach ?

Any prompt help on this will be highly appreciated ?

Thanks

Best Regards

CK

Hi,

1. You can go for patch 175.If u found any pblms with 175 degrade to 155..before doing all these backup the current kernel

2.Kernel files will be db independant and dependant wat u mentioned is exactly rite.downlad those and also download those latest r3trans,r3load,tp..etc and put it along with 175

3.You can patch it on DEV first and go ahead with QAS and PRD.Downtime should be planned accordingly

This look good!

Unpack first SAPEXE and SAPEXEDB and then after that all the rest. Then you will be up-to-date with your kernel.

Hi,

further to my thread for Kernel upgrade, I have downloaded SAPEXE_175-20000221.SAR and SAPEXEDB_175-20000223.SAR file for SUNos.

I have also downloaded dw_195-20000221.SAR file. now I have uncared SAPEXE_175-20000221.SAR. and then later I have uncared dw_195-20000221.SAR. The status is as given below:

~

-rwxr-xr-x 1 tkwadm sapsys 52865704 Mar 21 21:11 disp+work -> Original from SAPEXE_175-20000221.SAR

-rwxrwxr-x 1 tkwadm sapsys 53487040 Aug 5 21:19 disp+work -> Downloaded and uncar from dw_195-20000221.SAR

~

My Query:~

I have requirement to upgrade Kernel to 640 Patch 175. Now should I uncar dw_195-20000221.SAR and patch it as it will be patch 195 ?

What should be the correct approach ?

Is it ok to just go for uncar SAPEXE_175-20000221.SAR and do not go for any latest file for R3Trans, DW, tp , enq ? Just go for what is there in this SAPEXE_175-20000221.SAR file.

Thanks.

You can do both

I suggest though to update to the newest "kernel" (disp+work) - go for 195, this is the newest patch as of today.

also go get R3Trans, DW, tp , enq and lib_dbsl.

Hi Markus,

Thanks for the info, I have checked System-> Status and there it says

Unicode System No.

I have checked this earlier. But since in SM51-Sytem information-Release notes it was showing "ICU Version 2.6.1 Unicode Version 4.0" so thought of confirming.

Thanks for all the great help.

Those are just the libraries, the kernel itself only "knows", whether it's a unicode kernel or not. They are used if you e. g. communicate via RFC with a Unicode system.

Hi,

I have one query. I am checking the server Release info from SM51. There I am getting the Kernel Release and Patch information.

Below is the details information

SAP R/3 Kernel information

SAP R/3 Kernel 640_REL

Database Client Library OCI_920

created in SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-16 sun4u

created on Dec 11 2005 22:08:29

Kernel Patch number 104

Source ID 0.104

DBSL Patch No. 104

ICU Version 2.6.1 Unicode Version 4.0

ICU Version is 2.6.1 Unicode Version 4.0 -> Does it mean that my kernel is Unicode Kernel ?

please advise and help.

Thanks

Yes, it means that your kernel is unicode.

Here is the display from a non unicode kernel :

Check the status via

System - Status

Is there "Unicode = yes"?

Thanks Umesh and Markus for your prompt help. I appreciate it. I have one more question:

I have downloaded DBATL640O92_45-10004468.SAR, dsrlib_24-10004469.sar, lib_dbsl_188-10004468.sar and startsap_2-10004469.sar files. Is this required for Kernel upgrade Patch Level 175?

To get to Patchlevel 175 you need SAPEXE-175 and SAPEXEDB-175, this will install the new kernel.

The BR*TOOLS are NOT part of the kernel and are installed and patched separately.

lib_dbsl is the database interface library and comes with SAPEXEDB - but you should patch this up to 188.

You have two files to download for a full kernel patch:

SAPEXE*.SAR

SAPEXEDB*.SAR

All other files, whose creation date is AFTER that, where those two were created, are newer than that.

If you want to go to e. g. patch 193 you will need to unpack this patch AFTER you unpacked the above two.

SAPEXE.SAR includes an R3trans, tp - it's a full kernel whereas dw.193 is just the runtime environment (disp+work, gw, enq, some runtime libraries) without everything else.
