hey Mahesh,
the answer is actually very big
the advnatages are many.
the EP mainly gives you an easy way to connect the non-sap landscapes like SQL, oracle, DB2 etc etc to connect with SAP landscapes liek R/3, CRM, et al.
The netweaver platform is mainly to do this kind of integration at different levels.
under that EP mainly looks at the people integration layer..

first you need to understand why Portal?.....the difference b/w a portal and desktop like that.....
