Hi Juan,

how can you assist when the scenarios then change to the following

The configuration was carriedout on SAP version 4.7 during the 1st phase of the

implementation, using a temporary server which hosts the Dev, Prod and Database.

The 2nd phase which is coming up will involve the following activities:

Installation of SAP ERP 2005 SR1 on the new servers (prod and Dev)

Installation of SQL Server 2005 on the thir server

Migration of the existing configuration data on SAP 4.7 to the new PROD and DEV

servers running SAP ERP 2005 SR1

what would be the best way to carryout this exercise?

1. install ERP 2005 and the with the help of the Functional consultants use the migration workbench

2. do a system copy, then upgrade the 4.7 to ECC 6.0

Hi Trevor,

In my opinion the best way to proceed is to do a homogeneous system copy to their respective new locations, once the systems have been moved check that everything is working as it should, then prepare and carry out the db upgrade and finally the system upgrade... the reason for this is because you'll probably will have more space in the new boxes and you're systems will be sitting on their final destination and running on different databases so there will be no complications...

Hi Juan,

thanks so much, what if you use the option system copy under additional lifecycle activities in sapinst? i have noticed that it points you to a location where you want to export the database, would this be a good way of doing a system copy?

we have also carried out 2 upgrades, will this complicate the process in any way?

when you used the backup/restore option did you start a new installation as we do when we are installing a fresh new system or you used the system copy functionality?

Thank you so much you have been very helpful and i will reward for the help

Hi Trevor,

you need to run Sapinst in both source and target system, In the source you need to create the export and in the target you need to install the system using the system copy funtionallity...

I'll carry out the upgrades on the os or database before the system copy and make sure that the versions are exactly the same in both source and target.

Hi Juan,

I would like to know, what procedure did you use? did you use the back/restore method or export/import method.

on the target server what processes do you run? i have read that you start a new installation using sapinst and when we reach the database installation phase we stop the installation and then do a restore and then continue with the installation after the restore.

correct me if i am wrong

Hi Trevor,

I use the back/restore method, Database specific system copy... and then at the target used sapinst stop the installation - restore the database - resume the installation.

So basically you got it right

Hi Trevor,

I just finish a homogeneous client copy Windows2003/Oracle and its very strait forward... I used the SAP Guide and did some pre run checks like install jsdk 1.4.2_12 , check the JAVA_HOME env variable, add the saptranshost in the host file and that was pretty much it.... The rest was step by step as described on the guide

Is there any particular areas that you may want some additional help??
