Hi,

There is a client that wants to move their system from one server to a new server that they acquired. The environment is Windows on SQL. so i would like to know that best way of moving the system to the new server

1. do a new installation on the new server then do a remote client copy

2. do a backup and a restore

pliz do advise me on the best option to take.

I would also be grateful if anyone can provide me with documentation on how to execute this procedure

Hi Trevor,

a remote client copy is not a complete copy of a system because you'll miss all or parts of client independent data. Therefore I would recommend to do a "real" homogeneous system copy as described in <a href="https://service.sap.com/systemcopy">https://service.sap.com/systemcopy</a>. You may read the guides within media library for your release.

You may do the copy by backup / restore or with SAPinst by using R3load. Backup / restore will be quicker, but R3load will lead to an additional reorganization of the system.

I would recommend the backup / restore method if you did not delete clients or started archiving lately. If you expect a significant shrinkage of your database you should use the SAPinst method.

Regards

Ralph

Hello Trevor,

you should do a homogeneous system copy. This is the best way to take a copy of your complete system.

Please be careful using a backup and restore method, if you have a Java Stack this will not take ac omplete copy of your java stack as a lot of your Java Stack exists outside of the database.

If you do have a Java stack you can use a backup and restore method only in combination with an export of your Java stack by sapinst and Jload.
