Master data are used to reduce the data entered at Transaction level, so if you enter the specific data in customer and material master(few are obligatory) then you can just enter Customer & Material with quantitiy to complete the transactions. Ofcourse there are other master data like pricing conditions.....
you can have LSMW-Legacy System Migration workbench designed, then you can maintain it in excel and upload at one go in SAP...
