Does anybody know if NetWeaver 7.0 runs on Windows 2003 Advanced Server 32-bit Enterprise Edition with 64-bit extension? I can't quite tell from the PAM.

Hi

Another question: Which one Microsoft Windows OS do you suggest for Netweaver 2004s?

32 or 64 Bit?

We have a HP DL380 G5 server, and we've just got the NW2004s, and i don't know which OS is the best for it.

thanks

Go for 64bit - definitely.

Check the above note I mentioned:

[...]

32-bit platforms will be desupported for productive use with applications built on releases subsequent to SAP NETWEAVER 2004S. As of basis release 6.20 productive use of 32-bit platforms is not recommended.

Peter and Markus,

Thanks for your fast answer. And what Server edition do u suggest? Standard, Enterprise, or Datacenter?

We bought NW04s for developing, not for use in productive firstly. max 2-3 user will use that system.

It depends on the amount of memory you will use.

Check http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/evaluation/features/comparefeatures.mspx.

Glenn,

Windows 2003 Server 32-bit with 64-bit extention is not the official MS product specification.

Microsoftts (64-Bit) versions product names for the XEON EM64t and AMD64 processors are:

• Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise x64 Edition

• Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Datacenter x64 Edition

you can also install a Windows Server 2003 (the 32 Bit version) on the same box, but you should definitely go for the 64 Bit operating system.

no, you must use a full 64-bit OS.

This is not true.

See Note 931024 - FAQ: 64-bit platforms for Windows:

[...]

Currently the following two 64-bit platforms for Windows are supported by SAP:

 • x64 (also known as x86_64 or AMD64)

This is a 64-bit microprocessor architecture designed by AMD. Later on Intel also introduced a compatible architecture called EM64T.

 • IA64 (Intel Architecture 64)

This is a 64-bit microprocessor architecture designed by Intel and Hewlett-Packard, implemented by processors such as Itanium and Itanium 2.

[...]

So you are wrong - EM64T/x86_64/x64 IS a 64bit platform.

yes - and that is correct - although a bit misleading...

an Intel Xeon Processor is mainly a 32bit processor - and newer versions of that processor have a 64bit "extension", you still can run 32bit operating systems natively on those processors without a performance impact (compared to Itanium-2).

Yes - it does.

http://service.sap.com/nw2004s

--> Availibility

In the powerpoint you will see, that Windows 2003 running on "x64" is supported.

EM64T == x86_64 == x64 == AMD64 - those terms are used as synonyms.
