CLIENT_ORACLE_HOME

Hi,

I am upgrading SAP r/3 4.7 to ECC 6.0 on windows 2003 32 bit server. I received error CLIENT_ORACLE_HOME is not set in environment variable. My database is Oracle 9.2.0.4. I have not installed oracle client. Do I require to install the client? I have searched for it in sap market place but could'nt find it. What value shall I give for the environment variable CLIENT_ORACLE_HOME?

Please help....

Hi,

Please see SAP Note 556232.

I extracted some info from SAP Note 521230 (eventhough it is Unix, but similar to Windows):

Q: Why is Oracle client software required?

A: Oracle client software must be installed on all servers with R/3

instances for the following reasons:

a) The R/3 kernel is always linked to a specific Oracle release that

is largely independent of the Oracle server release used. For

this purpose, an "interface" is required, which receives R/3

requests in the Oracle release format linked with R/3 and then

transfers them so that they are also understood by the Oracle

server. The Oracle client software includes this interface.

b) Application servers do not have any access to the Oracle server

software. Special software parts (such as codepage or error

information) must therefore be stored there. These components are

also contained in the client software.

CLIENT_ORACLE_HOME=<Drive>:\usr\sap\<SID>\sys\exe\run

cheers,

Vincent
