Can someone help me understand SAP?

Could somebody please help me understand SAP. I'm trying to get a really good overview of SAP and I'm struggling to piece everything together having had very little exposure to any technical info in the past. By trade I'm an historian but I've recently moved into IT recruitment and I'm trying to figure out the SAP market.

I think I'm getting my head around the different modules but struggling to get to grips with the different roles. Could someone explain to me SAP basis and what a Basis consultant would do? I think from what I've been able to research that ABAP programmers create the codes and lanaguages for SAP, and then next come SAP security people and I think basis is next but not sure exactly what it is. Could someone help me out?

Are there any good websites that explain SAP to someone like myself who has very little knowledge?

Welcome to SDN!

SAP is broken down into functional and techncial areas - functional consultants being the Finance and Controlling/Supply Chain Managment/Supplier Relationship Management, etc

You then you get the technical side - ABAP (Coders/Programmers in backend), Java Developers - (Portal developers - front end - and Process Integration - XI - middleware). These two tend to crossover.

There are many more area that cover technical and functional.

Basis covers system, database and occaisionally operating system administration and maintenance. Sometimes there is an overlap to Security and Authorisations as well, depending on the size of the company/teams, and areas of specialism.

Wikipedia is a good resource for all things SAP:
