Diffrence between Taxnomy and Hierarchy in MDM ?

Hi Srinivasarao,

Taxonomy and Hierarchy are almost similar on a broader sense.

The below examples can give you a clear idea.

Hierarchy tables can display hierarchies in master data, such as product hierarchies, which are displayed in a tree menu.

One example is an org chart, with branching between areas and departments.

Taxonomies, on the other hand, are used to categorize or classify master data into coherent groups according to defined attributes, like product groups. For instance, a category “bottles” might automatically contain subcategories “1 liter bottles,” “1.5 liter bottles,” and so on, which can be used to form a uniform expression of the “volume” attribute.

Hope this helps

Regards

Kiran..

Hello,

First of all both are to group Objects together.

1. Hierarchy is more to drill down in a directory which is a subdirectory and so on...

                                 /Blues
Example:     music ->
                                             / 60'ies Rock
                                Rock  ->
                                              surf Rock

If in this example one Object is of kind "60'ies Rock" it is also kind of "Rock" and kind of music.

2. Taxonomy is more to classify Objects to a common characteristic which do not have to have a hierarchy:

One object can have more than one characteristic.

Example 2:

a) Object "Mouse" has the taxonomy characteristic "Animal", "small", "tail", "furry", "4 legs”...

b) Object "Elephant" has the taxonomy characteristic "Animal", "big", "tail", "4 legs", "trunk”...

Hope my examples can somehow describe the difference.

Best Regards

Srinivasarao,

A taxonomy and hierarchy are virtually the same thing. The most apparent difference is that the Taxonomy is really your "master" hierarchy. In MDM you can only have one "master" taxonomy, but you can have multiple hierarchies. Typically the taxonomy that is chosen is also used to be the basis for creating families in Family mode.

Thanks,

Tim
