Info required on time dependent Navigational attribute

We have a situation where we need to do some date effective ( or time-dependent in SAP world...am still to come out of i2 world!) definition of navigational attribute on a characteristic to be used in DP. We saw some option on Nav Attribute in RSA1 to make it time-dependent, however we have not been able to make it work so far. Is there anyone having experience in this area, please share your views and experiences. We wanted to know if there are any challenges in terms of doing forecasting or realignment etc.
