Hi,
Common Distribution Channel and Common Divison are maintained so that if any master data like customer or material maintained with respect to one distribution channel can be used in other DCh. It prevents the multiplication of master records.
Eg: A customer is created for say sales area 1000/20/00 then the same customer can be used in sales area 1000/30/00 if we maintain 20 as common distribution channel. Hence no need for extending the customers...the same for materials also.

hai,
buisness scenario:
in ur buisness u might be selling several products, but among them there might be customers who are a part of one or more products or who are apart for one or more distribuion channel .
so inorder not to have any redundant data by maintaining couple of master datas
sap have given the option of "common divisions and common distribution channels"
so you maintain a main division and give other division as reference to them, and u create master data in the main division and u once after maintaining common division and distributuion channels u can access that master data to the reference
divisions.
caution: u cant change master data in the reference distribution channel and reference division. it is simply extended, u can only utilise but cant make any chages to that.
reward points

sriram.

Common DC and Divisions are used to reduce the amount of configurations needed and also the master data
If we are creating multiple sales areas, all the DCs and Divisions can be referenced to a common DC and division. After that instead of enabling a document type for all the new sales areas, we can enable the document type only for the common sales area. Then the doc type will become applicable for all the sales areas which are referenced to that common sales area.
The same can also be used while creating customer master data.
Hope this helps.
