ECC 6.0 ABAP only vs ABAP + Java

Hi All,

We're preparing to upgrade from R/3 4.6C EBCDIC to ECC 6.0 UNICODE on V5R4. One of my main decision points is whether or not to install the Java stack. From a conservative perspection, a simple upgrade staying on the ABAP stack only is attractive (e.g., less hardware, shorter upgrade cycle, less risk to the live system). From a long term perspective, it makes sense to install the Java stack now and be prepared for future projects that can take advantage of it (build it and they will come). I'm interested in hearing from anyone who has upgraded to ECC 6.0. Did you install the Java stack and why or why not?

TIA,

Stan

do not install JAVA if you do not need it.

ion your case, I would do a simple technical upgrade (by keeping ABAP stack).

When you have cleared this successfully, you can investigate what JAVA can bring to your company and decide to install it or not.

this is exactly what I've done for BW upgrade to nw2004s. no Java stack yet.

Hi Stan,

unfortunately you are wrong here ...

Java might be nice & fancy and so on - BUT:

You can (and should) install it at ANY TIME !

=> You should install the Java Stack as soon as you need it for some solution - and fortunately for R3 this is untypical right now - in BW it is more or less default to have Java.

=> you do your upgrade with abap only and do not install java - if you should need it you could install at any time ...
