SDBINST run problem on Solaris

Hello experts,

I'm sorry for my dummy comments here.

I've try to install a SAP application and in this installation the SAP sapinst tool call a SDBINST -l which results in a SDBRUN .

This stucks and no further progress is done.

In the process list I see (or similar SDBRUN calls):

bash-2.03# ps -ef|grep 9669

root 9683 7077 0 18:10:54 pts/4 0:00 grep 9669

root 9672 9669 1 18:10:40 pts/2 0:00 /usr/bin/showrev -p

root 9670 9669 0 0:00 <defunct>

root 9669 9574 7 18:10:36 pts/2 0:04 /mnt/47x2SR1/sb/maxdb/UNIX/SUNOS_64/SDBRUN -indep_prog /sapdb/programs -indep_d

A truss on this manual execution show some segment violation errors!?

I'm not so firm with the reading of a truss.

And at the moment the machine is rebooted by someone else so I lost my truss info.

A manual SAPINST -h also show the same result.

I've tried a newer SDBINST SAR archive version (7_5_00_28) from service.sap.com , but I've have the same problem on Solaris.

The same manual SDBINST -l on Linux works fine!

So I think some system environment is wrong but what?

Is a package or patch missed?

Have anybody a hint for me?

Best regards

Ernst

Hi Ernst,

first of all, it's no dummy question.

Regarding your SDBINST issue, can you try the following:

SDBINST -trace 5

and see how for you can get with that?

It should write a trace file in either the /sapdb/data/wrk directory (if it already exists), or else in the directory from which it has been called.

The trace file should be named something like 'maxdb_installer_trace'.

You can send the tracefile (compressed) to me by email.

Kind regards,

Roland

Hi Roland,

thanks for your help!!

I've try the SDBINST from an extra directory, where I unpacked the SDBINST and all the other SW from the SAP-SAR archive.

bash-2.03# ./SDBINST -trace 5

^C

bash-2.03# ps -ef|grep SDB

root 24171 23619 20 16:07:57 pts/5 0:10 ./SDBRUN -trace 5 --programname SDBINST --main SAPDB::Install::StartInstall::ma

root 24176 24025 0 16:08:09 pts/3 0:00 grep SDB

root 23787 21443 0 15:53:09 pts/4 0:25 ./SDBRUN --main SAPDB::Install::StartInstall::main -l

(The other is not from me!)

I brack this by CTRL-C because no return happens.

In the directory no additional file I can see!

Here is the file list status from the directory:

bash-2.03# pwd

/mnt/popp/Patches/Solaris/maxdb-server-sun-64bit-sparc-7_5_00_28

bash-2.03# ls -la

bash-2.03#

I think the core is also from one experiment with the SDBINST, can it be helpfull?

I also try the SDBINST-SAR-archive on other Solaris systems and on all other systems it works fine with out any problem, so I assumed it's something with the special environment, e.g. we use a NetApp filer as storage which isn't the case on the other systems.

But I also try nfs mounted file systems with out any problems on the other systems.

All systems have different Solaris patch levels, perhaps some paths make me troubles.

In hope of help

Ernst

We use a Solrias8 in a NetApp filer

Hi Ernst,

the developer found an error in SDBRUN and fixed it. We're not sure it will fix your issue too, but we can at least try.

I will send you an email with the patched SDBRUN attached. The size of the attachment will be around 0,5 MB.

Please rename the original SDBRUN on your system, before exchanging it for the newer SDBRUN.

Kind regards,

Roland

Hi Ernst,

thank you for the positive feedback after testing the new SDBRUN.

To answer your questions:

1. How official is this SDBRUN?

This SDBRUN is a 7.5 Dev. version (Basis 7.5.00.29 + Bugfixes)

2. Will this SDBRUN be used by SAP?

Yes, this bugfix will be included in a MaxDB version >= 7.5.00.31

3. Will this SDBRUN work with existing packetversions?

This SDBRUN is compatible with all MaxDB Installationskits for 7.5.00.*

Hope that answers your remaining questions.

Kind regards,

Roland

Hi Roland, not sure is this is the same issue that we are running on Solaris 9, but here is a brief issue that we have currently on our system when trying to run SAPInst tool either from cdrom or from local directory, nothing came back nor register on the host at all when ran %prstat to see what is going on the host. we could not run sapcar either. tried sapinst -v to get the version, and that too did not work. any suggestion is greatly appreciate it. We have checked our environment settings, DISPLAY, JAVA_HOME, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and all checked find. we know the display came back cuz we're able to run xclock and xhost and xterm and got a pop up back from them. But we could not run sapinst nor sapcar.

Suggestions anyone ?
