Has anyone some precise/detailed information about this issue?

Thank you!

The performance gain you get is mostly caused by a different addressing model of 64bit applications.

On 32bit you're limited to a 2 GB (3 GB) address space for one process whereas on 64bit this address space is virtually unlimited. Given all the buffers a SAP system has the amount of memory, that can be used by the application data, is very limited on 32bit.

Additionally, all new SAP applications based on 7.10 and higher will be built as Unicode only applications so you will need even more memory.

To get back to your question: Performance gain can be between nothing and 100 % depending on how much memory you put in the box and how you configure it. But 64bit is definitely the way to go for the future.

Check Note 931024 - FAQ: 64-bit platforms for Windows for more information. Also read in that note point 5:

5. When will 32-bit platforms be desupported ?

32-bit platforms will be desupported for productive use with the coming release of SAP ERP 2007. As of basis release 6.20 productive use of 32-bit platforms is not recommended.

hello Axel,

see also note 996600.

For any platform you run on W2003 you will need to apply note 1009297 - this will significantly speed up the performance.
