i5 uncapped partition configuration help

Former Member

We have a POWER 5+ 550 4 way with 32 Gb memory running SAP ECC 5.0 with two logical partitions- one for production and the second for QA and development.

We would like to dynamically balance CPU utilization across partitions by optimally configuring our HMC profiles to create two uncapped i5 partitions in a shared processor pool configuration.

Does anyone have a similar environment in production that can offer real world experience tips and/or specific configuration suggestions? We have found several IBM i5 virtualization pdfs that are useful but none specifically address optimizing SAP partition CPU performance on a 4 way box such as ours.

Thanks for any help.

Hi Tom,

what do you think on making 1 CPU the minimum for the PRD and 0,25 for the DEV/QA. Then use the uncapped mode with a waight of 64 for DEV/QA and 128 for PRD.

I'm pretty sure, this should be OK in your environment

Hi Volker,

It has been a long time since I have posted a question to the group and it is very good to hear from you again. Thank you for your prompt and helpful response.

We had not thought about keeping the minimums small so that most of the processor capacity is in the shared pool to be used by either partition as needed. The weighting should prevent DEV/QA from taking too much processor if PRD is calling for it at the same time. This sounds like a very good plan for keeping unused processor capacity to a minimum.

Thanks,

Tom
