External definitions are used to import the structures which are already defined into XI Repository, so that u can avoide creating the same structure.

HI Prasad,
Extrnal definition are imported within the XI for a particular namespace and these definitions include xsd,wsdl and dtd definitions .
You can import them in XI and then use in yr scenarion
Generally xsd definition are imported also wsdl are also sometime done
