Database Instance vs. Central Instance

Hi,

Is there any formal recommendation by SAP to install the central instance on the same server where the database instance is also installed? What would be the trade-off of keeping both on the same machine instead of installing the central instance on a different server? Any help on that will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Renition,

This is simply a matter of resources and preference. When the CI and DB are on the same server, then they will have to share the resources of the server (CPU, Memory, Disk, etc.) and also compete for the resources. So, a heavy DB operation can affect users logged on to the CI and vice-versa. Separating them means no resource competition but, of course, requires an extra server.

If you do not want an extra server just for the CI, then you could install it with the DB instance and restrict users from logging on to the CI (via logon groups, etc.)

Best Regards,

Matt

Hi,

In addition to resource issue (which is most of the cases valid reason for separating DB and CI) as mentioned by Matt, there is also a security reason people sometimes want to separate DB and CI...

E.g. you can install DB on a separate server which is connected to CI server via a high-speed private LAN. DB server is not opened to Public (User) lan.Only CI server and other application servers are connected to Public (user) Lan.

Cheers !!

P.S.: Pls reward point if answer was helpful...thx.

Hello,

I do not think that should a problem represent. We have CI and DI on different server installed as the DB and SCS(MSG and ENQ).
