Need for SRM and infrastructure

Hi All,

I am a MM Functional Consultant, now iam moving into SRM, Can anybody throw some light on

1. What is SRM ?

2. Need for SRM ?

3. Front and Backend systems of SRM?

4. How the data flow between R/3 and SRM will happen?

5. Whether it is possible to maintain all master datas(like Material master , vendor master) in SRM or we need to maintain in R/3 and need to be replicated in SRM, if it need to be replicated how it will be done?

6. All the data created in SRM will be replicated in R/3 or not?

7.Whether it can be used as standalone system?

I have searched the Forum, but i am not able to find enough information
