I am trying to use VA05 tcode to display the sales orders. Getting the message that worklist is not generated with message number VR 420. Please advice.

first check order is available or not ,then check one of the option in va05
just give material number and search for the sales order or customer number so that u can get sales order as well as date range.
Make sure you have all orders checked,
Make sure the partner ffuncion and organizational data is correct.
if that doesn't work try OSS note 623803.
