Hi,
When you say Web AS 6.20, is it actually an R/3 system just like version 4.6,4.7 or XI backend system.
Moreover when you import and RFC/IDOC , is it importing from R/3 or XI backend system.
Please do advise
RFC or IDOC can be imported from R3 and from WAS also . But the WAS should have ABAP stack and should not be standalone JAVA installation.

Hi,
Now every SAP system has a WAS(Web App Server) attached to that .
It helps in xml messaging with other systems.
WAS 6.20 onwards systems can communicate using xml.
you do not have normal idoc defintions in XI.
you import these from R/3.
you can check this yourself:)

Hi Anandha,
When we say WAS 6.20 or higher , it simple means that we have an application server which have ABAP engine or JAVA engine or both.
While installing WAS you have three options
a) ABAP and JAVA stack
b) Standalone ABAP
c) Standalone JAVA.
R3 4.7 is the previous server. It has only Abap engine.
XI is installed over WAS. So after installing WAS you have the option of installing different NetWeaver components on it like XI or NWDI or Portal.
