Java components on portal server?

Simple question for those of you with ESS installed. Did you install the XSS java components on the portal server or the ERP Host server? We have a WAS with our EP install, but the master guide implies that the best "minimal" installation is to install WAS/java components on the R/3 server. Since we already have a WAS installed on the Portal Server, we would like to install the java components on that WAS (similar to ESS/MSS installs prior to ERP2004). Is this possible, or do we need to intall on the R/3 server as well?

Hi...We installed the ESS components on the R/3 J2EE engine. I don't see a reason why you cannot install on your portal j2ee engine. Our basis team has open messages with support on configuring SSO. The issue is regarding passing the ticket via passthrough from the R/3 j2ee to the ABAP side. I would be interested in knowing if you have the same issue by deploying on the portal side.

We have decided to install the WAS on our ERP server since this is our first install. In the future however we might want to revisit this as it seems redundant to require WAS on both your ERP and Portal servers.
