oracle upgrade and oracle client version

HI,

I am performing oracle upgrade from 9206 to 10.2.0.2 on HP UX IA64 with SAP kernel version 4.6D_EXT.

I have multiple SIDs running on the same server. One of tasks for the upgrade is upgrade oracle client to 9207.

Currently I have 9205 oracle client installed which is actually a link from /oracle/client/92x_64 to ORACLE_HOME for jdbc and lib. ocommon is installed direcotry (installed as per note 886783)

ll /oracle/client/92x_64

drwxr-xr-x 2 orat50 dba 96 May 10 2005 ietc

lrwxr-xr-x 1 oram50 dba 23 May 10 2005 jdbc -> /oracle/M50/920_64/jdbc

lrwxr-xr-x 1 oram50 dba 22 May 10 2005 lib -> /oracle/M50/920_64/lib

drwxr-xr-x 3 orat50 dba 96 May 10 2005 ocommon

Now, question is when I perform Oracle upgrade from 9206 to 10.2.0.2 for one SID , what should I do with oracle client. Is it safe to install oracle client 9207 since it is going to be used with all SIDs on the server (the ones that are still on 9206).

If yes, I assume I should install 9207 client fully under /oracle/client/92x_64 directory like I have databases running 10g (in fact I will have only one database running 10g, while others will be still on 9206 waiting to be upgraded).

Hello,

If you are using yu must go to 9207 ( or 9208)

At the same time, you have other DB in the same machine with a lower patch set.

You do not want to upgrade the other servers to a higher patch set ( which is strongly recommended as 9208 is the final patch set for 9i )

Then you have to follow note 964783 "Updating Oracle client on host with multiple SAP systems"

Indeed, after first database is upgraded to 10g , second one will be upgraded to 10g as well. But in a meantime before second one is upgraded we will have to have 10g system and 9206 system working fine with oracle client installed under /oracle/client/92x_64.

WHat to do in that case (during the time between two upgrades)

update 9206 to 9208. This is not a big patch and should be easy. Once this is ompleted, upgrade to 10g. I know this is not what you want to hear, but that's the only way to accomplish your job safely.

I would upgrade your 9206 DB to at least 9207 or even better, 9208.

well, my concern is related to OSS539922

..... version of the Oracle Client Library used cannot be greater than the version of the NLS files that are used...

In my case I would be using 9207 oracle client and databases would still be on 9206. Can we have any issues related to it.

BTW, do you know how I can check which version of oracle client I am really having installed (I see it is 9.2.0), but not sure which version exactlly. WHen I run disp+work -V I more, I receive

disp+work information

-

kernel release 46D

kernel make variant 46D_EXT

DBMS client library OCI_920__OCI_7_API

disp+work -V only tells you waht is the version of the database library, not the client version.

I am unsure on how to tell which Oracle client version is installed...

I know I HAVE TO user 9207 client for Oracle 10g, but my question is if I can use it for other SIDs running on Oracle 9206 on the same server sharing same oracle client.

I don`t see any issues about using the same client for 9i and 10g databases.

you can use Oracle client 9207 on Oracle 10g.
