SAP Exchange infrastructure basically consists of Integration Builder and Integration engine. Integration builder is a logical term. It comprises of Integration repository and Integration directory. Integration repository is the place we build scenarios and interfaces. Integration directory is the place where we configure all the scenarios for different applications. And integration engine isthe place where execute the defined configurations....

This is the way i would put it...first step to understand is XI is more like a bridge between 2 sap modules or sap and non-sap modules, the Architecture then depends on your implementation of where you want to plug xi in....Does that help.
