for unix:
startsap <instanceID>
stopsap <instanceID>
For example, enter:
startsap DVEBMGS00
for windows:
choose Start-> Programs-> SAP Management Console.
In the left-hand panel, right-click the SAP Systems node and choose Stop or Start.

After installing the SAP
first you have to start the sap server, for starting it open SAPMMC, and select the sap instance then right click on it and say start (or) u are having start and stop buttons in the tool bar.
after starting watch the table list (all has to be in the waiting state or instance must be in green color).
then u can access the SAP
and to stop it click on the sap instance and click on stop.

Once you install SAP server, you will get an icon SAPMMC. open that, right click on SID which is three lettered word and select "Start". If all the icons displayed in green color then it states that server is started.
If you want to stop server, select stop option, all icons comes to gray color.
