Let me dig into XI for some more time and later I'll ask about this versioning question.

Well,

BPM is part of XI's repository objects and hence lies under a namespace inside a proper Software Component version. You can always release a SWCV in order to create a new version.

Did you check the <b>history</b> option in the object? Open your BPM and in the menu Integration Process -->History.

This will show you all the changes made to this object (ofcourse you need to activate it to get a version).
