Hi Shailesh,
Pls find below the excerpts from SAP's help:
You can change the data contained in a material master record in one of the following ways:
Immediately
By scheduling the change
In both cases, you can make your changes with reference to a change number. This identifies a change master record in engineering change management and has the advantage that changes to different objects (such as the material, bill of material, or routing) can be grouped together under this number. If, for example, a particular product gives rise to a complaint, you can record any resulting changes to the relevant objects under this number. For more information, see Special Features for Materials in the SAP library documentation Engineering Change Management (LO-ECH).
Any changes that you make to material master records are recorded in change documents. In the case of scheduled changes, the change is stored in the change document and not in the material master record itself. The date at which the change is to take effect is stored in the document header. Such changes have to be activated.

Changing a Material with Reference to a Change Number
Changes to a material are stored in a change document rather than being saved in the material master record itself. The valid-from date is stored in the change document header.
Changes to the material master record with reference to a change number are made independently of the function.

Hi
Change Number
Number used to uniquely identify a change master record.
Use
If you make a change with reference to a change number, or create an
object with a change number, the following functions are at your disposal:
The system determines the effectivity parameters
The conditions that the change is effective under can be defined in the change master record as follows:
Changes with a date effectivity (valid from date)
Changes with parameter effectivity (for example: serial no. effectivity)
Log of the changes made
Documentation for the changes
Revision level to indicate the change status of a material or document
Changes released for the different areas in the company
Definition: change master record
Engineering Change Management (LO-ECH)
The data that contains all information required for managing a change.
The master record contains descriptive data, such as the reason for the change, and data with control functions, such as valid-from date and indicators for object types. In addition to this data, which can be updated directly, there is data that the system updates automatically, such as administrative data.
