Install Dev Workplace - startup failed

Former Member
0 Kudos

I'm trying to install NW SR1 SP9 on a WinXp system with 2GB of memory. Instance 0 will not start - the log output from jcontrol.exe is below.

There isn't a lot of information here, wrt. to error messages. Is there some other log I can look in to see why this failed?

I'm a bit suspicious about the amount of memory allocated to the JVM: 128mb seems a bit light for a j2e engine. I have tried upping the memory to 512mb, but to no avail - exact same result.

I know from installing the sneak preview, it asked you how much memory you wanted to allocate to the JCM - I think it defaulted to 1gb, but you had to change it to 512mb due to memory issues with Windows. With the dev. workplace install, you are not given a chance to change the memory allocation.

Help!

Further to my previous note, here's the log output from dev_bootstrap. It appears to be a JVM loading issue, but as to what the issue is, I'm not sure.

Memory issues?

Hi Ken,

there should be more info about the JVM error in the \usr\sap\<SID>\<InstanceNR>\work\std_bootstrap.out as described in <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/77/c959416576031de10000000a155106/frameset.htm">this</a> page. Can you check that?

Yeah, I saw that in the documentation. However, all thats in that file is this:

-

stdout/stderr redirect

-

node name : bootstrap

pid : 276

system name : J2E

system nr. : 00

started at : Wed May 18 15:45:32 2005

Not a lot of information.

Strange thing is I installed the DW on my home system, which is similarly configured, and it worked just fine. It's something machine specific, but what, and how to fix it?

Hi Ken,

not sure if it'll help, but I have the following two suggestions that you can try:

1. Based on the last trace information from the dev_jcmon, try to clear any (presumably existing) shared memory segment with wrong size as that solves a much similar issue with installation of the same Web AS release on Win XP.

Hope that any of these helps!

Ivaylo,

I did as you suggested, but unfortunately it had no effect - I get the same error when I start the JC00 instance.

I know about the memory issues Windows has, and so I know to resize the JVM smaller so the J2E engine will start. I also know about the rebasing trick to increase the amount of contiguous memory that can be allocated to the JVM. I'll certainly cross that bridge when I get to it, but unfortuntely I can't do anything about that until I can at least start the engine, or at least get it to the point where it complains about memory.

Thanks for your suggestion. Any other ideas?

Hi Ken,

sorry, but I've no further ideas... except that you can contact the SAP development support and get them work on that issue by creating a message on http://service.sap.com/message.

I opened a ticket late yesterday, and have started exchanging info with SAP support. We'll see where this goes.

Thanks!

Solution was finally reached this morning, with the help of SAP Support. The problem boiled down to a JVM conflict between the proper JVM (1.4.2) and the pre-installed (very old) JVM. c:\windows\java.dll and jvm.dll were removed, after which memory requirements were tweaked, and the server instance was correctly started. The interesting thing was that the new JVM was at the head of the system path, but Windows still loaded the other dll's, thereby causing the problem.

I will also add that we did have to rebase the Windows dll's to get enough memory to make running the engine+other components possible.

Hello Ken,

Can you please let me know the way to tweak the memory requirements. We have upgraded the J2ee to SP level 1s 13. But, since then the J2EE is not starting up. Its not being able to load the JVM.

I have gone through the following notes:

129813 NT: Problems due to address space fragmentation

835704 Java VM fails to initialize with Startup Framework

But, i am still not clear with the way of tweaking memory.

Please Advise!

Thanks,

Shivaji
