Do a search in google and you will find lot of documents "Evolution of Enterprise Service architecture" and "Enterprise Service architecture". These docs take you through R/3 and NW.

R3 represents a 3 level client server level architecture which has evolved into Netweaver which has some additional functionlities like
easy integration to other systems.

OS and database abstraction to name a few.
