Will some one brief me about different item category and item category groups. I need setting for Item category like which item catgory is assigned to which item category group and if possible setting for the item category

Item Category :

Item categories are defined to provide additional control functions for the sales documents and thus meet the demands resulting from different business transactions. A separate control is defined for each of these item categories. For example, the functions of a standard item are completely different from those of a free-of-charge item or a text item.

The system uses an item category to process a material differently in each sales document type. For example, you can define a different control for a material in an inquiry and a material in an order.

item category group

Group specified in the material master record.

The system uses the item category group and the sales document type to determine the category of a document item. For example, in the SAP standard version the item category group NORM has been defined for all materials that are kept in stock.

Item category:

Item categories provide additional control functions for the sales documents.

By using an item category, the system can process a material differently in each sales document type.

The item category in the sales document is defined using the sales document type and the material.

An item category can influence, for example:

 Whether the system runs automatic pricing

 Whether the item appears on an invoice

 Which fields are recorded in the incompletion log if they weren't entered in the order

 Which partner functions belong to the item

 Which text types belong to the item

 Whether the item appears on a delivery

 Whether you can create schedule lines for the item

Item category is determined in transaction code VOV4 and the factors which determine a item category are SALES DOC TYPEITEM CATEGORY GROUPITEM USAGEHIGHER LEVEL ITEM CATEGORYDEFAULT ITEM CATEGORY.

Item Category helps in the additional control over the sales documents and determines whether the item is relevant for billing,pricing and delivery.For example in sales order you can find thecombination of free goods along with the normal line item then you can find the combination of TANN and TANN.

The settings for item category is done in copy control VOV8 wherein you copy a standard item category and define the relevant settings.

Item category is defaulted in sales order, as we configure item category determination. Item Category is determined as under:

Sales order Type + Item category Group + Item Usage + Higher level Item Category.

Item Category Group segregates the material for determining the appropriate Item category. Fes example of Item Category group are NORM for regular material with delivery, LEIS for service material, BANS for Third party Sales & so on .............

Example of Item Usage are PACK for packing Material, CHSP for Batches, & so on ................

Example of Higher Level Item Category for free goods is say line item 1 is billable with item category TAN & line item 2 is free goods configured as TANN. Here TAN is Higher level Item Category.

Item Category governs how the line item will impact in Sales Order.

Hi Vishal,

Regarding your question about Item Category Groups, it is useful to determine an item category . Item category groups u will find the same in Matieral Master Data ( Sales group 2). For examples if your sales document is OR and your Item category group is NORM then ur item category is TAN,

thats OR + NORM = TAN.

Item cateory group is also useful during Bill of Matieral and will decide if the main item or sub item needs to be priced.

Hi Vishal,

There are two parts to your answer 1) item category is determined by the

1)sales document type

2) Item Category Group

3) Higer Value Item

4) Item Usage.

The basic function of an item category is,it tells us that what product or item u have in the order for example is it a free product if yes the item category would be called TANN which is the item category for free goods.It mainly gives u a decription of the product that you have in your order. All item categories have names like TANN. TAN which are of German Origin.

The second part is item category is useful since it tells us if

1) The item should be priced

2) If certain text items are relevant for delivery.

3) It will also tell you if the item you plan to bill is the same blocked for billing.

4) It will tell you if the item is of special stock which means is it a consignment stock.

5) It will also tell u if the item is of business items, business items are those items of which business data may vary.

Item category just contols whether the particular doccument is releant for pricing or how it should be billed,

Item category group controls the behaviour of the material

Hi ,

Item gategory is determined by using item category group & sales order type.

eg Std Item category group NORM then corresponding std item category is TAN.

This is the most important field as it also helps in determining schedule line category.

U can go in SPRO and check the settings for item category gp and item category

spro->img->sd->saled document item -.item category gp.
