Here is my attempt to explain Realignment.
It is a functionality of APO-Demand Planning. The master data in APO-DP is CVCs (Characteristic-Value-Combinations). Take an example of a product DCRTRV30 against which you have done your planning (meaning you have lot of data in time series keyfigures). But now this product is getting replaced by a new product code DCRTRV33. So what do you do. One option is to create new CVCs with product= DCRTRV33 at all locations (customers, sales office etc) manually. Copy the planning relevant data (in keyfigures) from CVCs with product DCRTRV30 to these new CVCs where product is DCRTRV33. And then deleting the CVCs for product DCRTRV30 (assuming that product is no longer in use).
So it is a three step process and you have to make sure the data selections are correct and also that you create all the CVCs (consider all the customer, sales office etc.)
With Realignment - this becomes quite simple.
Step 1- you enter an entry in Realignment table (once created for each planning area) with source characteristic value for Product = DCRTRV30 and target characteristic value = DCRTRV33, SAVE.
Step 2 - execute realignment (preferably in background).
That's it. New CVCs will get created, data copied from all (or restrictied keyfigures depending on APO version) keyfigures, old CVCs deleted.
This is the most common use of Realignment. But then there is the copy function. Also many customers use Realignment to intelligently delete CVCs.
